ugh no I do have more to say about this

the replies on my posts have revealed this absolutist notion people have on identity i.e. the necessity of identifying as a victim. because so many people are harping on "well, the child never said she was exploited or groomed. so until she comes out and says it, we can't say anything!"

and like. I need everyone to understand that this viewpoint is fundamentally missing the entire fucking point of what grooming is - and people on here are continually paying lipservice to stopping something they wouldn't even be able to identify? 💀

the entire process of grooming is convincing someone that what is happening to them is normal, that it's preferable, that they are "chosen" and special and remarkable for receiving this attention. it is above all creating the false perception that the child has a CHOICE in the matter (which the child will attest to) and these gut-wrenching realizations often don't hit until well into adulthood (if fucking ever)

yes, I'm agitated about this because I had to listen to a friend in her mid-20s say that the relationship she had at age 14 with a 40 year old man was something that she "wanted" and she didn't feel like the man had groomed her at all. there are other people in my life who have been groomed and if you have not been there for someone who's gone through it, you have no concept of how long it takes for people to identify and face these patterns from their childhood and speak out about what happened. a youtuber who just turned 18 will not say it. an ex-child pageant teen will not say it. someone's inability to speak on it does not mean that the harm did not happen.

I'm using the analogy of child pageants because it's another situation where half the population recognizes it as grooming, while the other half is caught up in this idea of "nobody's *making* the girls do this, they're so excited and they want to be here! their parents aren't physically pushing them out onto the stage. they're smiling and having a great time. they say they're fine."

and it's just so deeply missing the point of what it is to be a child. with so little power, living in a household and fed and clothed and only allowed to do fun things by the good graces of someone from whom you've gotten almost your whole outlook of the world from.

no, nobody's dragging them out onto the stage. the parents of child youtubers also aren't forcing them to press record. but there is such a lack of basic analysis happening where people completely ignore the actual material rewards, motivations, and praise that these children continually get from their parents in order to keep doing that which is profitable - to keep performing actions which gratify strangers who are not invested in the safety of that child.

so we should be able to simultaneously acknowledge that parents make their kids do pageants / parents make their kids bring in ad revenue, alongside the fact that yes! kids have free will! and some of these things that kids do happens to be fun for them! but I am just asking people to ponder the difference between a) a kid playing dress up at home, running around with the family video camera and recording some home videos that only their siblings and parents will ever see

and b) a parent seeing that this brings their child joy, and going on to purchase elaborate costumes, props, makeup, cameras, microphone, laptop etc for the purpose of putting their kid directly in the public eye in a provocative manner that makes money

if people are still insisting that this act falls on a moral spectrum based on whatever nebulous "intentions" beyond money the parent has, then it's somewhere between active financial exploitation and flat out grooming, and that's it. a parent who cultivates an environment in which their child is incentivized, praised, and materially enabled to perform a behavior, ("you can pay for college by doing this!") in the very limited space in which a child may exercise their free will, in full reliance on that parent for their literal survival --- that parent is, in fact, exploiting them.

Imo, this is the most telling/concerning line of the explorers

As we’ve seen, the environment of Explorers is incredibly toxic. 3/4 of the other admins have each insulted or taken shots at Amethio somehow. And it looks like this is nothing new, it’s horrible how Conia’s reaction to him being in a room alone with them is ‘oh god i hope he’s okay’. Amethio is a minor, he’s in a room full of people who seem to all be much older than him and ,in complete contrast to Liko’s situation, they all belittle him and insult him for every little mistake. It’s really upsetting how the only two people who have any sort of concern for him are his underlings- but Conia and Zir are absolutely powerless to really do anything about this. As much as they care about him, I don’t think Amethio would even be able to allow himself to be proper vulnerable around them. He’s already having to constantly prove himself, so how could he do something as unprofessional as spilling his worries to his underlings? It seems the only one he’s comfortable being open with is Ceruledge, but once again there is very little it can do to help him.

Then there’s Hamber. I’ve seen a few people give him the benefit of the doubt, especially because of episode 34 where it looks like he’s taken a shine to Amethio. But don’t let his fake concern fool you.

All i see here is basic professionalism, like he’s reading what he has to say off a script. He doesn’t actually mean what he’s saying: we’ve seen how high the Explorers expectations are, I mean just look at how much Amethio is overexerting himself in the second op, surprise surprise Hamber is sitting back and merely watching despite his earlier comment of not straining yourself. Not to mention, the moment things start going well for Amethio, Hamber immediately undermines his agency by going with Sango and Onyx to sort things out personally. Like no wonder Amethio seems to be triggered by not being taken seriously when this is how his (employers? guardians? idk) treat him!

He’s also got soooo many red flags! The biggest being when Sango half-heartedly refuses orders, to which he responds:

Literally physically intimidating her! And her reaction raises even more red flags, despite her happy demeanour the way she instantly complies is very telling that this isn’t the first time Hamber’s resorted to such threats… and this is the same environment a 16ish old is being raised in!

Maybe it’s just the amount of pressure he was putting on himself, but look how stressed and low-key terrified Amethio looks when fighting Hamber!!

And even if we want to make the case that maybe Amethio is this special exception for Hamber and that he’s got a soft spot for him… he is ultimately still complicit in grooming Amethio into this shady organisation. Episode 34 even reveals that Hamber was the one who trained Amethio, which also fuels the idea that he might have been some random child they find and realised how easily they could manipulate him into becoming the perfect loyal admin. Well i personally subscribe to the Amethio is an orphan theory rather than Gibeons son, especially considering that comment about Gibeon ‘awakening’, Idk if Gibeon is even properly alive.

still thinking about my post from the other day about eobard making barry the flash about a decade earlier, when he's still a teenager, so he'd be easier to manipulate. and then obviously i started thinking about where len would be in this scenario because i'm unwell and i have permanent leonard snart brainrot :)

assuming barry's 13 in this AU and we're sticking with the same age gap, len would be around 30... so then i started thinking about how different the dynamic would be, with a lonely barry who's being increasingly isolated by eobard, right in the thick of the most tumultous time in his relationship with joe, because he's always sneaking off and coming back all busted up and lying his head off and acting all cagey and exploding with temper every five minutes---except while joe thinks he's just a traumatized kid acting out and having a hard time at school, really he's off every night being "trained" by eobard and then being pitted against fully grown adult metas... though i do think i'd make at least some of them the same age as barry if only because imagine the ANGST of barry getting his powers, thinking he finally has one up on his bullies, and then the other kids at school start turning into metas as well.

i'm thinking specifically of tony woodward—all the pain and frustration and humiliation that twenty-five-year-old barry felt facing up against his childhood bully, now with powers... imagine that, except he's still at school, still stuck in the thick of it with this kid who's made his life hell, except now his bully has superpowers, and so any fantasies barry might have had about kicking his ass now he's the flash and is more powerful than any of the kids at school could imagine? well, forget it, because tony's STILL bigger and stronger than him and now he's now kicking barry's ass outside of school too

anyway i'm getting sidetracked. my point is i was thinking about moody teenage barry and an older len who's faced up against the flash, thinking there's a new player in town, only to discover that the flash is some scrawny punk kid with no one in his corner, and all the adults in his life are failing him, ESPECIALLY this creep eobard thawne who's "mentoring" him. len takes a very dim view of anyone who's getting a kid mixed up in the criminal world, considering his own father did it to him, AND he's just getting skeevy vibes off eobard anyway because he's an adult and better equipped to see through eobard's manipulations, unlike barry, who's doing the infuriating teenage thing of thinking he's sooo mature for his age and knows what he's doing and is not gonna listen to anyone who's trying to warn him that this whole thing is super sketchy and he's falling victim to a predator, but unfortunately he's not gonna realize it until he's a decade or so older and his frontal lobe develops---

and so we have this (platonic bc barry's like 13/14, though barry probably has a lil unrequited crush) coldflash dynamic with them kinda being friends bc len's somehow inadvertently ended up a mentor/support system for this fucked up, scrappy, little meta kid because god knows no one else is looking out for him, and anyway here's a small snippet of what my brain's doing (unedited but whatever we're just having fun and god knows i can't start another insane sprawling AU right now as much as i've been violently chewing on this idea all day, soooo)

Barry shrugged his birdlike shoulders.

For a moment, Len focused on the map laid out in front of him, considering his next move. When it came to locks, carefully getting them to open up was his specialty. When it came to people, not so much.

He decided to be blunt. “He touch you?”

Barry’s mouth popped open, outrage and disgust mingling together. “No!” he protested, his voice cracking a little. Immediately, his mouth snapped shut, jaw jutting out mulishly, and he glared at Len. “Not like that.”

Somehow Len doubted that was all he was intense about. Clearly something about this Eobard creep was making the kid’s spidey senses tingle, and probably for good reason. Len knew his type—there were plenty like him in prison, doing time for their proclivities. And plenty more on the outside who were better at hiding it. Just because the guy hadn’t put his hands on the kid so far didn’t mean he hadn’t thought about it.

“You thought about talking to someone?” Len asked. “An adult?”

Barry gave him a withering look like only a teenager could, then looked him insolently up and down, like he was missing something very obvious. Len gave him a similarly derisive look right back, one with over a decade of extra power behind it, just to show him how it was done. “I meant an authority figure.”

“You mean like a shrink?” Barry scoffed—which was pretty similar to what Len’s response would have been if anyone had made that suggestion to him. “Pretty sure Joe’s insurance wouldn’t cover another one. And we’d have to go out of state. I’ve seen every shrink in the city and they all think I’m crazy.”

“Your Dad, then.” Not that Len believed a guy who murdered his wife was exactly a stellar role model, and clearly Henry Allen was no stranger to manipulation himself, to have the kid so staunchly convinced he hadn’t done it when it had happened right in front of him—but having a father in prison had its perks. Len’s own father wasn’t exactly father of the year, but even he’d have called in a few favours from Iron Heights if he caught wind of some creep sniffing around his kid, if only on principle.

“I’m not allowed to see him,” Barry muttered.

The dark look in his eye told Len that there was little use in suggesting he told Joe. Clearly, they still weren’t getting along.

people are asking for clarification about the mother's involvement:

1) please describe to me a world in which a 13 year old would have exclusive access to ad revenue earnings amounting to $30,000 a month with a bank account that her legal guardian would benefit from in exactly zero ways

2) no, the videos no longer exist on youtube because they were exploitative, that's the entire point (you can track them down, but I'm not going there) and from those of us who were watching everything unfold when other youtubers began covering the story, there was extremely concerning sexual slang dropped into the scripts that lead to either 1 of 2 options:

a) these were an adult's additions to the scripts

b) these were things a minor had come up with on her own (maybe repeated, maybe she didn't know what they meant!), and her mother, who helped her create the POV roleplaying videos, was 100% a-okay with her 13 year old daughter looking into a camera to a completely uncontrolled public audience, making sexual innuendos in a murmuring whispering voice distinctive of ASMR, while wearing what amounted to "sexy halloween" costumes

I'm aware that news outlets are not capable of saying "her mother was exploiting her" without getting into an extremely long and unwinnable battle with a woman who has 100% control of the story - half of youtube was saying this too before all their videos got removed because youtube didn't want to be responsible for libel 🙃

but please use your brain for 2 seconds and tell me whether you're arguing that her mom a) doesn't know what sex is and couldn't possibly anticipate a single odd thing about her teenage daughter roleplaying sexy scenarios with a faceless audience or b) she did know what the effect would be but she's uhhhhhh a feminist who wants her daughter to do what she wants???
